Being Bored is an unpleasant feeling. When we have an unpleasant feeling or emotion we usually do one of three things. We Avoid, We Resist or We React.
With Boredom I think most people avoid.
Boredom really is a state of being underwhelmed.
When that happens we turn to such things as Snap Chat, Facebook, Tik Tok, Instagram, or video games. Quite often we binge watch shows on Netflix or whatever streaming platform you have.
If you are not allowing yourself to be bored at times you are actually giving yourself a disservice. Being bored is Good for You!
One researcher says, “Boredom is both a warning that we are not doing what we want to be doing and a ‘push’ that motivates us to switch goals and projects,”
Studies have shown that boredom can lead to activities such as volunteer work. Right now we are seeing more youth volunteering in their communities because they are unable to go to school or work.
If your brain is constantly stimulated by other things you won't have the opportunity to ponder and think of the future. What your future goals will be and figure out how to achieve them.
So the next time you are in line somewhere (and lets face it, there is a lot of lining up going on right now), you can decide to pull out your phone so that you don't feel bored or you can decide to let your mind wonder and see what you come up with.
If you like the idea of allowing yourself to experience some negative emotion and being OK with it then book a free consultation with me. They are only 20 minutes long and you will not walk away disappointed. I especially love working with young adults and teens who struggle with anxiety.
